Deliciously soft and savory Swirled Garlic Herb and Cheese Bread featuring a flavorful blend of garlic, fresh herbs, and melted mozzarella cheese twisted into a tender homemade yeast bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Filling

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast: Mix warm milk, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare dough: Add eggs, softened butter, all-purpose flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  3. Make garlic herb butter: While the dough rises, melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Add finely minced garlic and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in the chopped fresh herbs, then remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Roll and fill dough: On a floured surface, roll the risen dough into a large rectangle. Brush the surface evenly with the garlic herb butter mixture. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the buttered dough.
  5. Shape the bread: Roll the dough tightly into a log. Carefully slice the log lengthwise down the center to expose the cheese layers. Twist the two halves together with the cut sides facing up to create a swirl effect.
  6. Second rise: Place the twisted dough into a greased baking pan. Cover and let it rise again for 30 to 40 minutes until slightly puffed.
  7. Bake the bread: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Beat the egg with water to make an egg wash and brush it over the dough to give the bread a shiny golden crust. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the bread is cooked through and golden brown.
  8. Cool and serve: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for 15 minutes to set the layers. Slice and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For enhanced flavor, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top before baking.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing to maintain clean, distinct layers.
  • If using dried herbs instead of fresh, reduce the quantity to 2 teaspoons total to prevent overpowering the bread.
