Ingredients

Scale

For the Batter

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg

For the Apples

  • 3 Granny Smith apples

For Frying and Serving

  • High temperature oil for frying (such as vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, or peanut oil)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a deep-sided pan over medium-high heat until the temperature reaches 375°F, ideal for achieving a crispy exterior.
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk and egg. Whisk the wet ingredients with a fork, then incorporate them into the dry ingredients until smooth. If the batter is too thick, thin it with a few dashes of regular milk for easier dipping.
  3. Slice the Apples: Core the apples using a small cookie cutter to create rings approximately 1/4 inch thick. Ensure all seeds and cores are removed for a clean ring shape.
  4. Dip and Fry: Dip each apple ring into the batter, coating it completely. Carefully place the battered rings into the hot oil. Fry for a few minutes on each side until they turn a golden brown color.
  5. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried apple rings from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Once drained, dust them generously with powdered sugar and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use high smoke point oils like vegetable, grapeseed, or peanut oil for frying to prevent burning.
  • The batter thickness can be adjusted with additional milk to ensure a light coating.
  • Serve immediately for the crispiest texture as they tend to soften upon standing.
