Cookies
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box Devil’s Food cake mix
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
- Black food coloring (optional)
Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1–3 tablespoons milk
- Green food coloring
Decorations
- Round green sprinkles
- Halloween sprinkles
- Candy eyeballs
- Pretzel sticks
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease three 12-count mini muffin pans to prevent sticking.
- Make Cookie Dough: In a large bowl, combine the Devil’s Food cake mix, eggs, canola oil, and black food coloring if using. Mix until the ingredients are well incorporated and form a consistent dough.
- Form Cookie Cups: Scoop approximately 1/2 tablespoon of dough and place it into each mini muffin cup. Flatten the dough gently with your fingers to evenly line the cups.
- Bake Cookie Cups: Bake the cookie cups for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set. Remove from the oven and while still warm, press an indentation into each cookie cup using the back of a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon. This will create space for the frosting filling. Let cool completely.
- Prepare Buttercream Frosting: In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt, mixing until smooth. Add milk one tablespoon at a time to achieve a smooth, pipeable consistency. Mix in green food coloring until you reach the desired shade.
- Fill Cookie Cups: Using a piping bag or spoon, fill each cooled cookie cup with the green buttercream frosting to resemble bubbling potion cauldrons.
- Decorate: Garnish each cookie with round green sprinkles, Halloween sprinkles, and candy eyeballs. Break pretzel sticks in half and insert one into each cookie cup to serve as a stir stick.
- Serve: Arrange the decorated cookies on a serving platter and enjoy your festive cauldron cookies!
Notes
- Store the cookie cups in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days, or refrigerate for up to one week.
- The undecorated cookie cups can be frozen for up to three months. Thaw before filling and decorating.
- Use black food coloring sparingly to avoid an overly bitter taste in the cookie dough.
- If you don’t have mini muffin pans, regular muffin pans can be used but the baking time may need adjustment.
- For a vegan version, substitute eggs and butter with appropriate alternatives and confirm cake mix is vegan-friendly.
