Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

Layers

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (dark or semi-sweet preferred, but milk chocolate works too)
  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (dry roasted and salted) or walnuts

Creamy Caramel Topping

  • 1 (14 oz) package Kraft Caramels
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (or half and half)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pan and crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (325°F if using a glass baking dish). Lightly coat a 13×9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray or line it with foil and then spray the foil. In a bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs with melted butter and press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
  2. Assemble the first layers: Pour half of the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the graham cracker crust layer. Next, sprinkle half of the chocolate chips, flaked coconut, and chopped nuts evenly over the condensed milk layer. Gently press this layer down firmly using a fork to compact it slightly.
  3. Melt caramel and pour: In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, melt the Kraft caramels with the heavy cream, stirring constantly until smooth and fully melted. Carefully pour this hot caramel mixture evenly over the layered bars.
  4. Add the remaining topping layers: After the caramel, add the remaining half of the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the bars. Then layer on the remaining coconut, chocolate chips, and nuts evenly on top.
  5. Bake and cool: Bake the bars for approximately 25 minutes or until they are lightly browned on top. Remove from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, cut into bars or diamond shapes. Store covered at room temperature.

Notes

  • Although caramel-flavored sweetened condensed milk can be used, it is recommended to stick with regular sweetened condensed milk to allow the actual caramel topping to shine with its rich flavor.
  • These bars can be cut more easily after chilling in the refrigerator if preferred.
  • They can be frozen, but the texture may slightly change upon thawing.
  • If allergic to nuts or if coconut is not desired, these can be omitted or substituted with butterscotch chips or other favorite mix-ins.
